Tioram air Tìr Back on Dry Land

Tioram air Tìr (mar Chuimhneachan air Murchadh Chaluim) Back on Dry Land (in memory of Murchadh Chaluim)
Chuir Dòmhnall Bàn agus Tòrman
gu muir i a-raoir.
Chunnacas i stealladh
aig briseadh na faire,
an uiseag a’ seinn!

Lorg Coinneach muir domhainn
am beul dubh na h-oidhch’;
thug e greis air na sgeirean
ach tharraing iad às e
eadar dà lunn.

’S chan eil fhios a’m dè ’n cùrs
a ghabh balaich na h-Aird,
ach gun bhuail iad gu cala
fichead mìle bhon dachaigh
am baile nan sràid.

Na Moirich ’s na Leòdaich,
’s ann orra bha fonn
nuair a sgaoil an dubh-cheò ud
’s a chunnaic iad Tòlas
a’ riaghladh nan dram.

O, bha dalladh air òrain
’s bha dalladh air leann;
’s chan fhacas an Steòrnabhagh
– fiù ’s air an Dròbha –
samhail nan sonn.
Dòmhnall Bàn and Torman
put to sea last night.
She was seen
breaking through the waves at dawn,
the lark singing.

Coinneach searched out deep water
in the early black hours
of the night.
He spent some time on the reefs, but they
pulled him off between two swells.

And I don’t know what course
the Aird boys took,
except that they struck harbour
twenty miles from home
in the town of paved streets.

The Murrays and the MacLeods
were all in fine form
when that black mist dispersed
and they saw Tòlas*
selling the drams.

Oh, they set to on songs
and they set to on beer,
and there was never seen in Stornoway –
even on the day of the Drove –
their like.
